Britney’s Circus Hits San Diego
September 26, 2009
According to George Varga of San Diego Union Tribune Britney Spears wasn’t kidding when she declared "Baby, I'm a put-on-a-show kind of girl," during her opening number Thursday night at the San Diego Sports Arena.
The Circus tour is in full swing and according to coverage represents the setting of a new standard for live performances, the merits of which are still open for debate.
«As a lavish, eye-popping, ear-numbing spectacle, Spears' ultra-high-tech show provided a nearly nonstop sensory overload that could keep even the most ADD-afflicted attendees watching in rapt attention», Varga said of a show that featured trapdoors, hydraulic lifts, props on wheels and more pyrotechnics than you could shake a stick at, not to mention dancers, acrobats, jugglers, clowns etc.
A debate could center around whether the first two words in the expression «live music performance» are irrelevent in Spears’ new standard, and can be discounted.
She looks fit and trim, and works reasonably hard throughout her shows, but with the vast majority of vocals and band accompaniment prerecorded can her concerts even be counted as «live» musical entertainment, or are they simply choreographed on-stage discos?
It’s possible to sing capably and dance simultaneously during a show (witness Byonce et al), but Varga concludes that Spears has no need to trouble herself or her fans with such a challenge. It would be great if she did though.
