Miley Cyrus slips "you're gay:" does she deserve a break?

Miley CyrusNovember 12, 2009
Miley Cyrus is now causing a buzz with a recent "you're gay" slip-up that she made at a concert in Kentucky. As reported by Daily Fill, while Miley Cyrus was performing 7 Things, she appeared to change the lyrics from "you're vain, your games" to "you're vain, you're gay."

In spite of leaving Twitter, Miley Cyrus just can't seem to catch a break with the media. If it isn't pole dances, fake feuds with Demi Lovato, or 20-year-old boyfriends, it's scrutiny over verbal gaffes.

Did Miley Cyrus intentionally change the lyrics? And is she herself anti-gay? I would give her a break on this one.

Miley Cyrus' "you're gay" slip: the performance
First of all, we don't know if she really said "you're gay." The last part of the word "-mes" could have been cut off by the band, the screaming crowds, or the microphones. Second of all, even if she had uttered those words, it could have been a slip of the tongue or due to the singer running out of breath. When she sang "you're vain," it sounded like "you're vay."

Miley Cyrus' "you're gay" slip: her record
Miley Cyrus has a history of offending the PC police, notably by slanting her eyes in a photo (a gesture that some Asians took as derogatory). Still, should one "you're gay" slip-up automatically condemn Miley Cyrus as a raging "hater?" Has Miley Cyrus ever intentionally made a derogatory statement about gays, donated to anti-gay lobbyists, or used derogatory language in reference to homosexuality? Given that Miley Cyrus is not politically active, we have no proof of her private beliefs.

Miley Cyrus' "you're gay" slip: does it really matter?
And lastly, does it really matter what imagined private beliefs Miley Cyrus holds about gays? Even if she really had said it, she's a singer, not a politician. Should liberals stop watching Charlton Heston movies because he was conservative? And should conservatives stop voting for Joanna Krupa on Dancing With the Stars because she posed for PETA ads?

If Miley Cyrus had uttered slurs or hateful rhetoric about gays, that would be one thing, but this week's fiasco was likely just a slip of the tongue.
